It's about two strangers who meet online. They don't know who they are or how old they are. All they know is, that it's another human being.
~ Jenova Chen on Journey

Journey is NOT designed with a concrete plot to be 'understood' and 'figured out' - it was actually meant to be open to interpretation. It can help to think of Journey as less of a linear story and more of a metaphor; not about what happens so much as the meanings behind it all.

There is no spoken or written (or signed) communication between players in Journey. All they have to rely on is body language, and the sounds the characters make, both of which are limited.

One aspect of Journey that players often love is how it allows two people to become friends not despite the fact that they know nothing about each-other, but because of the fact that they know nothing about each-other. Because it strips the players of all reference of things like age, gender, race, background, beliefs, etc. it allows the players to simply see each-other for what they are at the heart: people. In this way, Journey works as an equalizer. Players get to bond over a shared experience of cooperation, and then - if they want - they can reach out to each-other. When it comes to helping and befriending each-other, all other factors are secondary. Because of this, it helps create a feeling of unity between different peoples, based on a virtue of everyone simply being people at the end of the day, regardless of everything else.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

The Japanese title, 「風ノ旅ビト」 or "Kaze no Tabibito," could be translated in a few different ways, mostly depending on word choice. Options include "Wind Journeyer" and "Traveler of Winds."
